Day 1-Morning

I am getting ready to leave my civilization in the Huang He Valley in China. I am going to go on a journey to find a place to live that will be profitable. I am going to go across the land to spread my love for herb making. I need to find a place for my family to live to get away from the terrible sickness in my village. My daughter and I will be traveling by our pet elephant for an easy way to carry our supplies and to travel. We need to find a place to live fast because my parents are very ill and my oldest daughter has devoted all of her time to taking care of them. There is a very deadly sickness in my village that we must escape from. In my village there is also a war going on so my husband and only son both recently died in the war.

Day 5-Evening

At this point in my journey I am missing my family and all of the people in my village. I am an apothecary and I am the most well known and successful apothecary in all of the Huang He Valley. I am in the upper middle class due to the fact that everyone loves all of my herbs. The separation is tough but the one thing getting me through this hard time is my favorite food, rice. I brought enough rice with me so I could eat it once a day for 60 days.

Day 7- Midday

Today is a very hot day and I am starting to get tired from all of the traveling. We have decided to stop for the day and just relax. I love to make salves, it is my hobby. I also love to cook. During our few long breaks I plan to make salves, cook meals for the trip ahead, and teach my daughter the ticks of being an apothecary. I realize that we should be getting close to another civilization and get there in the next few days.

Day 13- Evening

We have started to come across people. To me this means we are getting close to another civilization. I am very anxious to see what civilization we will come across and how different their culture is. The thing I value the most in my culture are the Three Cultural Heroes. The Three Cultural Heroes are Fu His, the inventor of writing, hunting, trapping, and fishing, Shen Nung, the inventor of agriculture and mercantilism, and the Yellow Emperor, who invented government and Taoist philosophy. Citation, n.d.
My favorite one is Shen Nung because he invented agriculture and mercantilism which is why I am an herb seller today. If it wasn’t for him I would be doing something else. Tribal warfare is common in my village and I would like to change this. I would wish to change this because then I wouldn’t have to move my family away form my village, from the sickness and fighting. I don’t want my family to get hurt. I don’t want my family to grow up around this behavior and become like these people and fight all the time.

Day 14- Night

Today we came across another civilization Mesopotamia. Upon arrival I had hoped that we would be treated with respect and would be welcomed to their society. I did have some fears. I was afraid that maybe they would attack us because we were intruding. I was wrong they welcomed us, but not at first. Some people knew that we did not belong in the town. Some people brought us food and water to help us. We were then taken to their leader. In Mesopotamia the priests were in charge. They made sure that everyone behaved in a way to make the gods happy. When we first arrived at the priests’ house we were nervous they would kill us or kick us out of their town. Once the priest found out I was an apothecary he immediately wanted me to help all of the people including himself in their herb needs.

Day 17-Morning

Over the past couple days we have just been exploring the Mesopotamian culture and way of society. I have noticed many things about this society. One of these being their society’s structure. They are a Patriarchal Society. Only royal offspring, sons of the rich people, and professionals(scribes, physicians, and temple administrator) went to school. Mesopotamia. The British Museum, n.d. Web. September 17,2010.
Most boys were taught their fathers trade or were apprenticed out to learn a trade. The girls stayed home with their mothers to learn housekeeping and cooking. The woman in Mesopotamia did have rights such as owning their own property. Ancient Mesopotamia; This History, Our History. Oriental Institute Museum of the University of Chicago, n.d. Web. September 17,2010.
I have also noticed how the people look. The priests all have shaved heads. In the upper class the men and woman wear jewelry(rings). The men wore skirts, had long hair, curly mustaches, and long beards. The woman wore dresses of one shoulder, had long hair that they braded or wore up in fancy arrangements. In the lower class they wore jewelry, but is was not made of gold. They wore the clothes they could afford that was similar to the upper class and could switch classes easily. The slaves were prisoners that were brought back from other towns they had conquered. They worked for the kings, the temple, and the wealthy. The people of Mesopotamia would buy slaves at auctions.

Day 23- Afternoon

I have been in Mesopotamia for several days now and I have eaten many meals with them. I have noticed they like certain food such as: beef, lamb, goat, ducks, geese, turtle, fish and shellfish. These were the foods that were easily accessible to them. Other foods they like to eat include barley and wheat. These were crushed and cooked as porridge or ground into flower. Barley was also used to make beer. They ate locusts and roasted them as a delicacy. In my time in Mesopotamia I have noticed that they use the Tigris and Euphrates rivers for trade and transportation. The Mesopotamians did not have many natural resources. They traded with neighboring countries to get what they needed. Grains, oils, and textiles were traded to foreign cities to get timber, wire, precious metals, and stone.

Day 24- Night

Today I talked to one of the people from Mesopotamia about any of the fears the people in Mesopotamia have. They were afraid that the locusts would wipe out their crops. Another fear was the seasonal flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, so they built levees to hold back flood water. The Mesopotamian people believed in many gods. They believe that everything that happens to them (good or bad) is a result of the gods pleasure or displeasure.

Day 27- Morning

Today I got to see Mesopotamia’s army. They were very well trained. They also had good weapons. I think if they ever tried to conquer my civilization it would be tough battle. In my town they are trained armies that do nothing but fight all day. The violence is disturbing. We have great protection at our boundaries and would definitely be able to fend off the Mesopotamians.

Day 30- Morning

Today we will leave Mesopotamia and continue on our journey. Mesopotamia did have some similarities with my civilization. They were also very strong and powerful in their armies, they had some of the same divisions in their social structure, like the slaves being the lowest, they spoke a language that was not easily understood but was somewhat similar to ours. They had differences that were the government power was a priest instead of a king, and their social structure was not as divided as ours. They worshiped gods as do we.

Day 35- Night

Today I arrived in Egypt. Upon my arrival I expected to be treated as a friend and with respect, or I expected to be treated as a threat and threatened with death. When I did arrive I was treated as some sort of threat which I quickly tried to correct, for I didn’t want to get killed. I finally make it clear that I meant no harm, that I was just there to trade my herbs with them. After that I was treated as a guest and they trusted me. They took me to the pharaoh at the time and they explained to him why I was there. They have pharaohs as rulers. They were seen as gods in human form. The ruling was inherited, or passed down through family lines. Pharaohs were at the top of the line, then tomb workers, then peasants.

Day 41- Morning

After being in Egypt for a few days I have noticed things about them. They were darker skinned than me. They were much taller and had longer limbs. They wore tunics and colorful head pieces if they were of importance. If they were not of importance they just wear tunics and a belt of some sort. They also wore sandals on their feet, or they wore no shoes at all. Stierlin,Henri. The Pharaohs Master-Builders. Italy: Finest S.A./ Editions Pierre Terrail,1992.Print.
The Egyptians only fear was of invasion from surrounding Egyptian cities. The pharaohs were always trying to conquer other cities. They always had to be on the lookout for incoming warfare.

Day 45- Night

The Egyptians are located on the Nile River. They were quite skilled at farming crops, and timing it right with the floods. They also had an abundance of limestone that they use to build pyramids. They are also the first to build a boat, which was used to transport people, limestone, crops, and trading goods up and down the river. They grew most of their food and traded for the goods and foods they couldn’t produce. They were very excited to see that I had come to trade with them. They eat bread, beer, and other vegetables and dried fruit. Egyptian Life. The British Museum,n.d.Web. September 19,2010.
I feel like this would be a great place to live.

Day 47- Midday

I was able to see their armies today. I feel that if they wanted to conquer our civilization, they could. They have a lot of people and skill in battle. Plus they would have an advantage because everyone in our civilization is fighting each other. It would be like two wars being fought at once.

Day 50-Night

After being in Egypt for several days I have come to some conclusions. The language is very different here. It is very hard for me to understand what they are talking about, but we are trying to work it out slowly. Their religion is somewhat the same. They also believe in gods and the afterlife. It is not quite the same as in my religion, however. We believe in different people as our gods and a “heaven” as our afterlife. We also believe in our ancestors as spirits, and if we anger them our whole family gets punished. Our governments are somewhat the same. They have a pharaoh, which is a king like figure. We are ruled in relatively the same way. We have dynasties which are periods of times in which one ruler rules the whole area. They’re a king like figure also.

Day 53- Midday

I have decided to return home to retrieve my family. We will pack up all of our belongings and take them to Mesopotamia. I love it in Mesopotamia so much that I feel like it is the perfect place for my family and I to live. I have chosen Mesopotamia because the culture here is similar to the culture in my home village. Everyone is very caring in Mesopotamia and very welcoming. I think it will be the best place for my family and I to live.
