Traveler Journal

Prologue
I’ve been on many journeys before. I’m the best trader living among my nation, the Canaanites, and I’ve been telling myself that since the day I started this business. This is the first journal I’m writing while on a journey for trade. By now everyone, including the other city-states, in our nation knows who I am. I am Hiram, most excellent trader in all of Canaan. Not only do I trade between foreigners across the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia, but I distribute only the most brilliantly coloured clothe, jewelry and hair ornaments. Of course there are many other tradesmen from our nation, just I believe I do it best. I’m making Canaan wealthier every day, and I’m bringing in foreign foods we can’t grow here, like grains and papyrus the Egyptians have growing along the Nile. We use a lot of papyrus to write, because it’s easier that way than to etch words into stone. And the cedar trees we have growing near my village are good material to build sturdy ships, houses, and temples. And what I get out of it all is not only a personal legacy, but I get wealthier with every journey I make across the sea. When I die, I’ll have a solid gold sarcophagus made in my image, and I’ll be wrapped in purple cloth. (

I have almost everything I need: long-lasting customers, a few riches, and honour. All I need, and all I want more, is my own house. For now, I’m living with my sister, Dido, in Sarepta, Canaan, right on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. One day when the whole world knows about me, I’ll be able to retire from my work, settle down somewhere in the mountains, and spend the day resting under the shade of cedar trees, the same trees that built the ships I have sailed. But until then, I’ll be living most of my days on the sea, the place I love most….

Day 1 Early Morning
Usually I wake up just when the sun does, but today, I woke up when the moon had only run half its course in the night sky. I had to get moving before the sun did. I dressed myself in a plain tunic, and gathered my belongings, packing lightly; I’d collect more essentials along the way if I needed to. That was my way of doing things in my business; getting an early start on a seaman’s journey, taking only what I need, and simply living each moment at a time. I don’t need to rush. I don’t need hurry. My life is for sailing, and I’ll take in every moment of it. See I’m the kind of person that needs to live through something rather than just taking advice for my own good. Experience is my best tool.
I’ll be heading out soon, just after I remind my sister, Dido, what needs to be done in the house and what parts of it need more support so that the house doesn’t collapse over. Living here is tough trying to keep a sturdy house standing, because the land is too soft. Now, if I was the head of a wealthy family, working with all the other wealthy families to rule Canaan I’d expand our territories further north, reuniting with the other city-states. We’re separated by the mountains, and we’ve never been one people under one rule. That way I won’t be bothered and questioned when I move my living into the mountains.
Day 1 Dawn Has Broken

I’m late on my schedule. Dido is already out and I can’t leave until I’m sure she knows what to do. Perhaps I’ll just leave her a note on a piece of papyrus. Well I’ll be leaving by the time the sun reaches just over the closest village in the valleys, which break into the mountains. By then I should be back on my schedule, and will already be at the harbor leaving on the Galloi. We’ll be traveling to Greece first, and I’ll offer them Tyrian purple dye, cloth, and some jewelry I bought from a merchant in my village. In exchange I wish to gain different foods, most importantly figs and pomegranates. Then we’ll sail to Crete, which is just a little ways south Athens, Greece. Day 6 Midday

Currently, we’re sailing to Greece. I love it there; the people are very different in their daily activities than the activities the people in my village do, and their meals are very different. Last time I was there, I stayed at an inn where I was served olive leaves stuffed with rice and lentils one night. Well we’ll be there within the next two days. In the mean time, I’ve been hearing rumors about the Minoans practicing human sacrifice. I really have no idea if I should take Crete of my travel plans or not. I don’t want to experience the sight of sacrificing people the way people have been saying they do, but then again it’s just a rumor. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_civilization#Possibility_of_human_sacrifice)
Day 7 Nightfall
The rumor of the Minoans sacrificing humans has been haunting my mind lately. I really want to find out what’s going on in Crete. Besides, experience is my best tool. Well, tomorrow morning the ship is supposed to dock in Athens, Greece.

Day 8 Dawn
The Galloi has just docked in Athens. This is my favorite part of the journey, when I walk out into the bustling city-state, everyone eyeing me, waiting to see what I have to trade. But trading was not my immediate activity for now. First, I had to find myself an inn so I can rest. Later, when it has just gone past midday, I’ll set out into the village to start my business. That’s when things the village would be most busy. I’m very tired this morning. I could not sleep with the thought that I’ll be going to Crete, to a place where there are people who may be doing things so horrible, even if it’s their religion. Chills have been going down my spine every now and then.

Day 8 Late Evening

Today was just an average success. I traded some jewelry for two whole crates of pomegranates to one customer, and for some small pieces of pottery I got two vases of olive oil. Tomorrow I’ll try out again at midday, and then leave by nightfall on another ship called the Danais, and sail down to Crete…. Day 9 Midday

Since dawn this morning, no one came by. Nobody wants to trade. Nobody even wants a small canister of Tyrian purple dye. They’re all talking about a ship coming from the Minoans soon, the same ship I’ll be taking later. I’ve also been listening to some villagers referring to people from my nation as “Phoenicians”. It annoys me when they call us that, we have a proper name. But then they talk about how great we are for inventing the first real language, with actual phonetics. And it’s true; we have been the first people to speak an actual language. A second language has been derived from ours which the Greeks mostly speak. Another ship from China has come in for trade, but the Greeks don’t really like to trade with them because they don’t trust them. The Greeks only really trade with nations from along the Mediterranean Sea. But with no business really happening, I couldn’t wait until it was time to board the ship. Day 9 Late Evening
Soon, when the sun is totally down, I will leave on the Danais. But for now, I’m eating; I’ll indulge myself in Greek cuisine until I must go. I’ve had wine, goat meat, chick peas and figs, and the dolmas (olive leaves stuffed with rice) that I just love. Now I must gather my things from the inn, then make my way on over to the dock.

Day 9 Nightfall

It’s now time to go. I’m going to Minoan. On the ship, I’ve met a scribe from Minoan. He’s told me about how amazing his job (although I’m sure it could never beat mine) is, how important he is there, and how rich and respected he is. But he’ll never have a legacy like mine. When he finished talking on and on about his job, I explained to him the rumors I’ve heard. He looked me in the eyes and said, “Son, it’s perfectly alright where I come from. Our worship has been just as always lately. However…” This is when my heart stopped for a pause. “…there was a group of people, you know, collectors of some sorts, that claim to have found skeletons buried underneath the dirt. But the bones would have been from a while ago. So, don’t worry yourself.” I took in everything he said, telling myself everything was fine. And then he went on about the ship we were on, and how great the Minoans are because they are the first to have an actual navy. Day 11 Dawn
For the past couple of days, traveling has been fine. We’re in Minoan now, and have been for a little while. The sun’s just coming up, and the villages are still a bit quiet. But there are some people out. I haven’t heard anything more about sacrificing going on in Crete. Well I’ve started trading with some people around here, and I’ve traded a vase of olive oil for some silver coins. My inventory isn’t really full yet, even though it’s been more than 10 days on the journey. I think I’ll already leave tomorrow for Egypt, since business hasn’t been great anywhere in Greece yet.

Day 12 Nightfall
Tonight I’m heading out on the last ship of the night. We’re going to Egypt, and I’m sure trade will be much better there. I hope to get some more papyrus, because I’m running out of papyrus to keep writing this journal! So for the next days until I reach Egypt, I probably won’t be writing much. This journal closes, until the ship docks for Egypt.
